Soon The Hunt Will Begin
With presentations and papers over, I took the free time I had over the weekend and clocked in movies I wanted to watch. One was Bruce Lee's 'Enter The Dragon' and the other was Arnold "The Governator" Schwarzenegger's 'Predator'.
In Predator, Schwarzenegger plays Major Dutch, who leads a team of commandos on mission deep in the Central American rainforest to rescue a cabinet minister who is believed to have been captured by rebels. They are accompanied by Dutch's old friend Dillion, played by Carl Weathers of Rocky fame, who is now working for the CIA. Things start getting awry when they discover three horrifically skinned bodies which Dutch later identifies as men he knew from the Green Beret. They later infiltrate the rebels' base only to find out they have been setup by Dillion; there was no rescue mission, there was no cabinet minister. By then it is already too late, and on the way to the extraction point they find themselves being picked off one by one by an unknown creature which cannot be seen.
What's good: Masterful build up of suspense. The Predator. Great special effects for its time. The final showdown between Schwarzenegger and the Predator. Predator screaming while healing himself.
What's bad: A tad slow at the beginning.
I remembered being introduced to this show by my dad back when I was five maybe? It might have been a long long time ago but I still vividly remember the film and how I was looking so hard at screen trying to spot the Predator.
The movie starts off really slow but its entices you to continue watching because you never get to see the Predator. However, you do get to see things through his special heat-seeking vision, which I thought was pretty cool. Heat-seeking may be nothing now, but 20 years ago, it was certainly a big deal.
Once the rebel base is destroyed, things start picking up as Dutch's team is slowly and but surely picked off by the Predator.
The highlight of the show however, has got to be the final showdown between Dutch and the alien beast. In true David vs. Goliath fashion, Dutch, who has lost all his guns, has to make do with primitive weapons while he faces the Predator, who has his all powerful shoulder cannon and Wolverine-ish wrist-blades.
Considering the impact it had on me as a child, this movie is incredibly easy to recommend. No self-respecting sci-fi fan should miss this and if you are interested in getting to know more about Predators and Aliens, since AVP2 is now in the works, this movie should serve as a good starting point.

I love the Predator : one of the coolest character design for movies/comics - not sure which one came out first though :(
Mmmm... I did a little digging about on Wikipedia and it seems like that the movie came out first.
Anyways, Predators are seriously cool. Can't wait for AVP2.
Frankly speaking, your interests mirror mine - but I'm not so into football and action figures - figures are too ex for me (see see only) ;)
Anyway, keep up the good work! Found your blog via ping.sg :)
